There's a confusion we hear every week at the gym: someone calls to sign up for "futsal" and after 5 minutes of conversation, we find out they actually want minifootball — or vice versa. The two sports sound similar, are played in smaller spaces, but are fundamentally different, and cater to different player profiles. This guide will tell you in 5 minutes which is more suitable for you.

Futsal is a sport where every second counts. Five players on a court the size of a handball court, with a ball that doesn't bounce, means: constant contact with the ball, quick decisions, total pressing. There’s no place to hide — if you lose the ball in your own half, you’ll concede a goal in 4 seconds.
It's the ideal sport if:
Minifootball in Romania has exploded in recent years, especially in the 30+ and 40+ categories. It’s the sport where a former professional footballer, a 38-year-old accountant, and an entrepreneur who plays once a week meet on the same field. The Romanian Minifootball Federation organizes regional, national, and even representative cups, and competitions are accessible without having been a junior at an academy.
It's the ideal sport if:
Futsal requires specific indoor sneakers (non-marking sole) and shin guards. The ball is special but provided by the club.
Minifootball is played with classic synthetic grass sneakers ("multistuds" or "turf") and regular football gear. Essentially, if you've ever played football, you already have everything.
For someone who has never played football before,, futsal is surprisingly friendly: the small space means you get the ball often and learn quickly. The downside: the pace is killer at first.
For someone who has played recreational football,, minifootball is the natural transition — the rules are familiar, just in a reduced space.
Costs are comparable. The major difference is that futsal requires renting the hall (higher cost) while minifootball uses the synthetic field (variable cost depending on time and location). Both sports have monthly subscriptions at clubs ranging from [PRICE RANGE] lei.
CS Clujana is one of the few sports clubs in Cluj-Napoca that offers both futsal, under FRF affiliation, and minifootball, under FRMF affiliation. This means you can try both sports with coaches from the same club and decide along the way which suits you better.
Futsal training takes place at the "Horia Demian" Sports Hall, while minifootball uses both the hall and outdoor sports facilities, depending on the season.
